Meet the Doctors!
Dr. Kourtsounis (Dr. K)
Dr. Kourtsounis or “Dr. K” is a pediatric dentist originally from Long Island. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1998. After graduation, he returned to Maryland where his family had moved and was accepted into the top ranked University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery where he received his D.D.S. in 2003.
Upon graduation, Dr. Kourtsounis moved up to New York City and completed a General Practice Residency at the St. Luke’s/ Roosevelt Hospital Center. He served as chief his one year there.
After completion of his GPR, Dr. Kourtsounis worked in private practice for two years in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, focusing on pediatric dentistry.
In 2006, Dr. Kourtsounis was accepted into the pediatric dentistry specialty at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He served as chief resident and helped author various publications which appeared in local and nationwide dental journals.
Upon completion of his training in 2008, Dr. Kourtsounis opened Smiles for Kids in Whitestone. In 2011, Smiles for Kids in Ronkonkoma was opened.
Dr. Kourtsounis has continued to stay on at Mount Sinai as an attending faculty and has dedicated his free time to teaching at the residency and performing dental rehabilitation cases in the operating room under general anesthesia.
He is very active in the community and volunteers regularly giving seminars to various pre-schools in the area on dental prevention, hygiene, and diet.
He is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the New York State Dental Association and the American Dental Association.
Dr. Kourtsounis and his wife have a 6 year old son who is also very interested in becoming a dentist like his dad. He is a diehard Chicago Blackhawks and NHL fan, a car enthusiast who enjoys racing his car on the weekends

Dr. Shawn Francis II
Dr. Shawn is a New York native. He was born in Queens and later moved to Suffolk county. He received his undergraduate degree from New York University where he graduated with honors. Dr. Shawn then made his way to Columbia University where he earned his dental degree. While at Columbia he served as the student chapter president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and was recognized for outstanding promise in the field of pediatric dentistry at his graduation.
Dr. Shawn completed his pediatric specialty training at Albert Einstein/Montefiore Medical Center. There he expanded his skill set treating children of all ages, including those with special health care needs. Dr. Shawn looks forward to helping you and your children. He believes in working with families to create a positive dental experience and catering to each child’s individual needs. He is not only committed to helping children here in his own community, but Dr. Shawn has served on two mission trips to Guatemala where he helped treat thousands of children in need of dental care.
When Dr. Shawn isn’t at the office he spends his time doing CrossFit, training Muay Thai/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and exploring the Island with his fiancée who is currently training to become a pediatric dentist.
Dr. Monica Tanna
Dr. Monica Tanna is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist, specializing in the dental care of children of all ages. Dr. Tanna earned her dental degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. She completed her General Practice Residency at Montefiore Medical Center, where she solidified her desire to become a pediatric dentist. Dr. Tanna continued her training and obtained her specialty degree in Pediatric Dentistry at the Brookdale Hospital Medical Center.
After completion of her training, Dr. Tanna spent two years in California working in private practice, gathering more experience in all aspects of pediatric dentistry. She moved back to New York and continued working in private practice. In addition, she served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University College of Dentistry. Currently, she is a volunteer attending in the Department of Dental Medicine at Northwell Health.
Dr. Tanna is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, and New York State Dental Association. Dr. Tanna is excited to meet her pediatric patients and their families. Her goal is to establish a positive dental experience from a young age and create an oral health plan for each individual based on their dental needs. In her free time, Dr. Tanna loves to exercise and spend time with her husband and children.
Dr. Bertram Strachan Jr.
Dr. Bert is a pediatric dentist, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Cornell University, where he majored in Science and Technology Studies with a minor in Africana Studies. Dr. Bert obtained his dental degree from the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. He completed his post-graduate training at Jacobi Medical Center in The Bronx, NY. Throughout his training, Dr. Bert has held numerous leadership roles and has exemplified a commitment to improving community oral health through outreach and service, ranging from hygiene presentations for school children and expectant mothers to mission trips to his family’s home island of Jamaica.
Dr. Bert’s treatment philosophy is centered on the idea that all children and their parents deserve to be treated kindly, empathetically and respectfully, and that office visits should be custom tailored to fit the clinical, psychological and social needs of each individual. It is his hope that all visits will be positive and productive for both children and parents.
In his spare time, Dr. Bert enjoys working out, cooking, exploring brunch spots in the city, binge watching TV shows, playing with his labradoodle pup, and travelling to new destinations with his partner who is currently training to become a physician.
Dr. Viet Tran
Dr. Viet Tran is a board certified pediatric dentist who specializes in treating children and children with special needs. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Chemistry at St. John’s University and his Doctorate of Dental Medicine at Boston University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Tran completed his general practice residency at New York Presbyterian/Hospital of Queens before completing his specialty training at Stony Brook Hospital. In addition to private practice, he is a clinical professor at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, where he mentors and teaches future pediatric dentists and dental students.
Dr. Tran’s goal is to ensure children have a positive outlook on dentistry. He understands the importance of a good foundation to ensure parents and children understand the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene and complete health. He emphasizes preventive medicine and takes a conservative approach to all your needs. He understands the stresses of dental appointments and strives to make all appointments as fun and stress-free as possible.
Dentistry is a fast changing field and Dr. Tran is well educated and knowledgeable in current dentistry and dental procedures. He frequently takes continuing education courses and is currently a member of the American Board of Pediatric Dentist, American Association of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Society, New York State Dental Society, and Suffolk Dental Society.
During his spare time, he loves traveling with his wife, staying active, and keeping busy with his frequent renovation projects around the house and in the office.
Dr. Kaitlan Polkinhorn
Dr. Kaitlan Polkinhorn was born and raised in Reno, Nevada, where she attended The University of Nevada. She graduated with her bachelors, and went on to earn her D.D.S., from The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry.
Dr. Polkinhorn prides herself in being able to provide her patients with a comfortable experience and superior dental treatment. She believes that by educating patients about the importance of their oral health and systemic links, their quality of life will improve.
She now lives on Long Island with her fiancé, Ali, and dog Lilly. In her spare time, Dr. Polkinhorn spends her time dancing with a semi- pro salsa team and performing with various performance groups.
